A Painting Pilgrim: a journey to
Santiago de Compostela
A book by
Mark Hoare with a foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales
Walking
1000 miles across Europe, painting daily in
watercolour: frequently under an umbrella, often in
the lee of an ancient barn or crag or tree. Staying
with fellow pilgrims within walls themselves as old
as the relentless trudge of passing feet.
This book, fully colour-illustrated with 130 paintings and their
stories, describes the fragile diversity of food, landscape and culture which
changes subtly between one half-mile and the next across Europe. The paintings were made in 2000 during three and a half months of sun, rain, hail and snow.
This book was published in December 2003 to coincide with an exhibition of the paintings at The Prince's Foundation in London. In September 2004 the paintings were exhibited at Eye in Suffolk. Details of future venues will be posted on this website as they become available.
